Iron Feathers at Will Rogers World Airport

Oklahoma City, OK

“Iron Feathers,” Oklahoma City’s iron sculpture entryway at the Will Rogers World Airport, funded by Rotary Club of Oklahoma City and designed by Rand Elliott, FAIA, of Elliott + Associates Architects, was given to the citizens of Oklahoma City in a dedication service on April 13, 1990.

This gateway symbol to Oklahoma City, is intended as a gesture of greeting to visitors and residents, and to remind us of our American Indian roots.

Set in a meadow of wild flowers and silhouetted against the Oklahoma sky are four monumental arrows. These 70 foot shafts of steel are historically accurate in design and represent the strength, integrity, and larger-than-life efforts of the peoples who settled our great state.

The random placement of the arrows depicts the presence of the 67 American Indian cultures whose focus on Oklahoma has contributed to its unique fabric. The rusting steel symbolizes wisdom with age–our heritage frozen in time–as the color turns a dark Oklahoma earth red.
