Oklahoma Publishing Company

Oklahoma City, OK

The Oklahoma Publishing Company began operation on February 3, 1903, four years before Indian territory became the State of Oklahoma. This building project is, not only a new structure for The Oklahoma Publishing Company, but the first major project for them in more than 25 years and 88 years since its inception.

In preparation for the interview for the commission for this project, one singular idea seemed to be appropriate. That idea became the concept for the project.

The newspaper publishing business is unique in that their responsibility is to document history through local, state, national and international events – the daily newspaper chronicles history in the making. It was our recommendation that we weave the history of the world, as it has changed during the 20th century, into the building. The project included ten floors. We designated that each floor would represent a decade of the century. For example, the third floor would be the 30’s, the 7th floor the 70’s, and so on. The concept was developed by using front pages of the newspaper depicting historic events of the 20th century, as well as photographs from the archives of the newspaper.

Our client has said that this is the most advanced newspaper building to be built in the United States to date. By including fiberoptics, microwave communications and other devices for worldwide communication this is a state-of-the-art newspaper facility.
