Pottawatomie County Administration Building

A COUNTY SEAT'S NEW JEWEL

It’s a new building that had to be dignified and do well with its historic neighbors.

Rand Elliott Architects designed and built the new Pottawatomie County Administration building in Shawnee, Oklahoma to complete its venerable civic park. Joining a 1904 Carnegie Library and 1935 Art Deco Courthouse demanded carefully programmed functionality and design that

would reflect a respect for history.

SPACIOUS AND FITTING

The new two-story 20,000-SF administration facility accommodates offices and County Commission meetings.

At the outset, department placement and important adjacencies were identified through comprehensive programming sessions that also indicated the ideal square footage to respond

to the client’s current and future needs.

A key design consideration was the limestone-clad Courthouse, built by the WPA program, with an elaborate façade of cast aluminum.

The front entrance features luminous stainless-steel panels and cast stone parapet caps.

The interior features terrazzo floors and elegant restroom tile. Amenities also include new furniture and a bipolar ionization HVAC system that purifies the air.

CLIMATE-PROOF

A key feature is a transparent glass corridor connecting REA’s new Administration building to the historic Courthouse where for many years, administration offices were located.

WELCOME WARMTH

Step inside to find the building’s two-story lobby greets visitors with natural light framed, by organic and metallic elements. Overhead, a sculptural brass light fixture crowns the space, its design inspired by the neighboring Art Deco courthouse.
