The client was so excited about Rand Elliott Architects’ Classen Curve retail center under construction, they chose their location and tasked Elliot’s firm with designing a fun, modern spin on a children’s clothing store. Something one-of-a-kind.
Their Uptown Kids logo was based on a subway map to “a destination where parents and grandparents could find exceptional clothing, strollers, and educational toys.“
The resulting architectural concept was “kids’ clothes as art.” And art needs a frame, so the prominent grid emerged as an evolution of that idea. The store became a stage to brightly and beautifully present the stylish clothing and accessories at “Uptown Kids.”
The store’s grid also allowed for great flexibility in showcasing exclusives retail brands.
The requested children’s playroom area was built with Plexiglas walls so that parents can keep an eye on their kids enjoying playtime while they shop “in peace.” Its bright taxicab yellow color fit with the subway map logo.
Not long after its completion, the smart setting Rand Elliott Architects conjured landed on the cover of INTERIOR DESIGN’s ## issue – a very “Mondrian” dressing room for pint-sized fashionistas.
